ABOUT THE BOOK:
In October 2020, The New York Times Twitter account featured this headline: “Breaking News: The parents of 545 migrant children separated at the border still haven’t been found, court documents show.” 545 Children Without Parents involved me sourcing and severing 545 snapshots representing parents and children separated at the United States-Mexico border. I rearranged and taped the snapshot splinters inside an old accounting record book. An immigration case file became the book’s cover. It is a visual record of unsolved cases—a shelter of loss.
About sixty children were under the age of five when separated.
As I collaged and taped, my book became broader and harder to read. It no longer closes, and image fractures puncture every page.
The White House, Homeland Security. ‘House’ and ‘home’ are words full of meaning and emptied of meaning.
